Ridge Cap & Starter Strip

Ridge Cap & Starter Strip

Ridge Cap & Starter Strip

Ridge cap and starter strip are two of the smallest-looking parts of a roof and two of the most important. Starter strip sets the first course along the eaves and rakes so the shingles above it lock down and shed water correctly from day one. Ridge cap closes the seam where two roof planes meet at the top, covering the exposed edges and keeping wind-driven rain from working its way underneath. When either is missing, thin, or installed with the wrong nailing pattern, that's often where a roof starts to lift or leak first.

What This Work Covers

  • Starter strip — A dedicated starter course at eaves and rakes, set to the correct reveal so the field shingles above it seal properly.
  • Ridge cap — Cap shingles or panels set along the ridge and hips, fastened to hold against wind uplift.
  • Fastener check — Existing starter and ridge lines can be inspected for nail placement, spacing and exposure before deciding on repair or replacement.

How We Handle It On Site

  • Layout — Laser distance meters, levels and chalk lines keep starter and ridge lines straight and consistent across the roof.
  • Fastening — Pneumatic coil roofing nailers and cordless impact drivers place fasteners at the depth and pattern the material calls for.
  • Cleanup — Magnetic nail sweepers pass over the yard and drive before we consider the job finished.
